As time permits, I have been creating a digital model of the Apollo hatch. This is my first physical model of an Apollo hatch latch based on the digital model:

It is a fully articulating plastic model made using Rapid Prototyping techniques.

Thanks for the compliments. I'm sure you know how much fun space modeling can be.

I am planning to model the complete hatch as time and budget allow.

Here are the latest updates on the Apollo 11 hatch full scale model project.

The gearbox housing is a very complicated assembly. It was a bit challenging to make with Rapid Prototyping, but it would have been a nightmare to machine from an aluminum forging as was the original. (The model removes more material than the original part to save on material cost.) Here is the model (unfinished):

Here are the completed bellcrank assemblies, which allow the latch links to change direction at the corners of the hatch:

Finally, a complete set of fifteen latch assembly models:

That looks great John! Do you go make a whole new hatch with all the parts on it?

Yes, I am working on a complete working hatch full scale model. The hatch interior structure is not pretty enough now for a photo, but soon it should be. And many more parts are nearly finished.
