Has anyone purchased an Apollo Lunar Module model from the Phillipines? I have an LLRV that is beautiful, but a Mercury capsule that looks like garbage. I'd like a large scale lunar module that doesn't break the bank. I might have to wait for the resin kit from Shapeways but it's costly and I would have to pay to have it built on top of that cost. |

Dwight, what scale are you wanting? I had guys make me a custom 1:48th scale B-52 years ago to hang an X-15 underneath. The bids ran from $600 to $6000. Had a difficult time with historically accurate details. I eventually had to notch the wing myself where the X-15 tail stuck up and crave and add the X-15 pylon. I ended up having to repaint a large part of the model also. But the price was good and I don't know were else you could get something like this done. There are a lot of companies and most have a supplier in the U.S. that you can talk to. Start there. Having just met you at Spacefest I am amazed you can even contemplate another model now. My wife has cut me off from spending any more indefinitely. |

Contemplating one is cheap. When it comes to buying it that's a different tale altogether.

I have never seen a wooden Philippines model of the LM that I liked. They just cannot get enough detail working with wood. You would likely pay $150 for any of the wooden ones offered. For another $100-150 you should be able to purchase a Franklin Mint 25th Anniversary or Danbury Mint Apollo 13, which are in my opinion the best options around other than some of the works of art some the custom modellers around here take months to create. In the past year I have directed four other collectors to Franklin Mint models on eBay. Don't be afraid to look at the ones with broken or missing antenna. They go for half the price of an intact one. There are a couple of people on this forum who can help you replace antenna. I have both the Franklin Mint and Danbury models and I really like them. |

Yes, I have both of those. I want a large scale 1/32 or 1/24 lunar module. The Shapeways version by Vincent Meens is the gold standard but parts alone are about $900. With that level of detail I might spend that much again on having someone build it. I admit to being fearful about the detail level of a Phillipines build. |
