collectSPACE Mattel's Astronaut Barbie becomes a Mars Explorer with help from NASA A new collaboration between NASA and Mattel, the largest toy company in the world, is turning the Red Planet a tad more pink. "Mars Explorer Barbie," a new spacesuited version of the iconic fashion doll, officially launched on Monday (Aug. 5), to coincide with the first anniversary of NASA's Curiosity rover landing on Mars. Mars Explorer Barbie is packaged with a cardboard cutout of the six-wheeled Mars Science Laboratory, decked out in pink. "Ready to add her signature pink splash to the 'red planet,' [the] Barbie doll is outfitted in a stylish spacesuit with pink reflective accents, helmet, space pack and signature pink space boots," Mattel wrote in a statement describing the new doll, which as part of the company's "I Can Be" line of Barbie dolls has the added distinction of the being named the "Career of the Year" for 2013.  |

Question: She has a spacesuit and helmet, and backpack. Ignoring the fact the flightsuit doesn't seal around her boots, why isn't Barbie wearing spacegloves?  |

Folks - enjoy Mars Barbie - that's the CLOSEST the US "space program" is gonna come to getting people to Mars in my lifetime! How sad. |

Oh my yes I will admit to buying a couple. I have three young daughters and Barbie is a very popular toy in our household. I will have no problem purchasing this Barbie over the usual princess type dolls. |

There was also a Barbie Space Camp figure in a reasonably accurate Space Camp blue flightsuit, you can find them on eBay pretty easy. I can honestly say that's one Space Camp collectible I don't see myself owning. |

Actually, that may make her perfect for living in zero g full time with a neck so frail it could not support a head! |

Hmm... pair her up with a GI Joe astronaut, and you have the second married couple in space (after STS-47's Jan Davis and Mark Lee). Sorry, Ken. And to those red-blooded males reluctant to collect these 'action figures' (my term), don't worry — I have a Barbie spacesuit set on a blister card, and several versions of Barbie as Wonder Woman, my favorite DC comics character. So don't be shy!  |
