Here is the result of a couple of hours tinkering. This is based on a pdf I found on the web and cockpit photos. I accept that the dimensions are slightly out, the font isn't perfect and the grey is not right, but I'm quite happy with the result. Initially I was going to cut down aluminium or steel sheet and get it screen printed (£60), but I found a much cheaper option in my graphics dept! The image is printed on sticky back laminated plastic and then stuck over cut foam board. Switch Guards are from Historic Space Systems, and as I only had two I chose this panel! Really having trouble finding switches which are remotely similar, so I have left the holes blank for now.

As I only have two switch guards I picked a nice small panel to start with.Drawings were done in Visio as I don't have access to a scale drawing package. I printed enough to make three on an A4 sheet (the next to have bold text under the switches) and still intend to cut down a sheet of metal to make a more heavyweight version. As a proof of concept, I think it works nicely! Just need to find some switches! Is there illumination on this panel? I'm going to try to sandwich some acrylic sheet between the facia and the switch panel, and connect up an LED. Some photos I have seen have a red ring around the switches, but I'm not sure if this is just camera flare. If anyone has a decent close-up, I’d appreciate it! |

If you'll send me your email address, I can send you some photos of the interior of the Shuttle simulator at JSC under night conditions... Short answer is that the switches do not appear to be illuminated, or at least they weren't when I was in the sim. |

Thanks for the pics. You were lucky to get that opportunity.Can anyone help finding switches? Sent a couple of emails to HSS, but I guess they are being binned by their firewall. |

OK. Stumped on the search for switches. Does anyone know the part number? Are they Honeywell or Eaton (or what became Eaton)?I have looked every where for a toggle with a similar lever type to no avail. Help... |

John, I apologize for taking so long to reply to your request for additional information.The actual switches had been made by McGraw Edison of Manchester, New Hampshire. More recently they were made by Applied Resources. I have seen examples of switches with similar handles sold by Cutler-Hammer/Eaton as part number 8906K3154, and Micro Switch as part number 23AT428, and 4TL154-50. These types of switches may still be available, but I have not checked for several years. ------------------
