I am looking for information the F-86 Sabre(s) that Buzz Aldrin flew in Korea. Could someone advise where I might find color schemes, side numbers, personal markings, etc? |

There are no individual photos, or artwork of his Sabre. You are going to have to do a general squadron marking, and, you might want to look at artwork by Troy White depicting Sabres of the 16th FIS. Buzz has two MiG kills, scored in an F variant. |

The 51st FIW used three different colors of vertical striping on their tails. The 16th carried a blue stripe, 25th a red one, and the 39th a yellow one, all had a black checkerboard. Good luck, let us know what you find. |

I hope someone can help with this. I am still trying to locate a photo of an F-86 Sabre that Buzz Aldrin flew in Korea.
I tried the National Air and Space Museum and they sent me some photos of Sabres flown by the 51 FIS but could not narrow down a specific photo of Aldrin's aircraft. I also sent a letter to the U.S Air Force Museum and have not received a reply. I tried the Library of Congress and National Archives websites to no avail.
The only photos I have seen is a brief video clip of Buzz climbing out of an F-86 and the name "Faye"written on the right side below the cockpit. But that is all I have seen and the video does not show the complete aircraft.

I tried that. The website has a place for general inquires but when you enter the in the General information it just says "wait one moment" but will not take the message.Oh well, I will keep trying. There has to be a photo somewhere. |

I wonder if his publishers might have anything? Even if they don't, they might at least be able to confirm if what you are looking for exists or not. |

I saw a photo on his website of Buzz standing next to what looks like an F-86E of F-86F, but the photo is a frontal shot and does not show and side numbers or insignia. I said in a previous post that I saw a video of Buzz standing in a cockpit of an F-86 with the the name "Faye" below the cockpit, but it's a closeup and I cannot see and side numbers etc. I am going to go back and take a look at some video from various documentaries I have. I am determined to find some details. There has to be something out there. |

See if his squadron or parent unit has an association website. A lot of the WWII bomber groups have associations, but I don't know about Korea. An association historian may be able to help. |

Try the Sabre Pilots Association, which my dad was a member. My dad flew F-86F's in the Korean War with the 18th Fighter Wing and there's an actual model of dad's jet (FU-350) made by Academy. I have talked with Buzz how he was just up the road in Suwon from my dad's base in Osan. If you attend any autograph shows I'm sure Buzz will take a minute to give you some info on his jet. |

Wow, that's a great web site. Thanks for your help. I go will go through it slowly and see what I can find.If I get a chance at the ASF show I will ask him about his airplane. Perhaps he was not assigned a specific airplane and flew several different aircraft. Thanks again. |

Pilots generally got to call one airplane their own and have their name on the canopy rail, but yes, they would be assigned to fly many different aircraft in the squadron during a combat tour of duty. |

I know pilots are often assigned aircraft. But due to maintance issues, certification checks, combat damage etc they tend to fly whichever aircraft is available. For example Robin Olds F4C "Scat XXVII" has only two of his 4 Mig kills on the intake plate because he flew another Phantom for the other two kills.
