I am wondering if someone can help me; I have been trying to discern what the final colour of the Block I Apollo command module was. I have seen reference pics of it in both grey and white. Is this just a result of different lighting or what? Also I was wondering if the Block I had a blast protective cover (BPC) or were the tower legs just bolted to the craft?

Yes, the Block I spacecraft had a boost protective cover (e.g., Apollo 1 after the fire; S67-21295).

It appears that the Block Is varied: Apollo 1 was grey (as in the link above). It looks like Apollo 4 was covered in reflective tape. And it looks like Apollo 6 was probably painted white.

I couldn't immediately locate any definitive pictures of the CMs from AS-201 or AS-202 (although AS-202's CM may have been white).

Can I recommend that any serious spacecraft modeler obtain a set of David Week's drawings.

There is a site in French with some good images. Also, A Field Guide to American Spacecraft provides a good reference.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. These pics will help a lot. As for the Weeks' drawings, I'm not quite skilled enough to use them to their potential, but again, thanks.

  • CSM-008 light gray CM, silver overall with white radiators
  • CSM-009 (SA-201) white overall
  • CSM-011 (SA-202) white overall
  • CSM-012 (Apollo 1) light gray CM, silver overall with white radiator panels
  • CM-014 light gray
  • CM-017/SM-020 (Apollo 4) CM half-covered with kapton tape, half white; SM silver overall with white radiator panels
  • CM-020/SM-014 (Apollo 6) CM light gray; SM white overall (Most photos make the CM look white but it was not.)
I suggest you get a copy of Space In Miniature #16 - Apollo Command and Service Module by Michael J. Mackowski as the above are only the most basic details. The radiator panels on the block 1 kits are not entirely correct so if you want accuracy then you will need this book.

Here are a couple of views of my model of CSM-014 which was to have been used for the Apollo 2 mission.

All times are CT (US)
