This rocket was the test article to see if a Saturn V could withstand the vibrations that occured during powered flight. To do this, it was mounted in a massive test stand at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, which is still visible today from I-565 east. Following the testing, Von Braun ordered that the rocket be put in storage on the outskirts of MSFC where the US Space and Rocket Center was constructed around it. It lay outdoors for almost 30 years, falling victim to elements. It has since been restored and is now housed in the Davidson Center for Space Exploration.

Since many complain that the old Monogram Saturn V uses the Apollo Block I configuration, I though that I would take advantage of it. Sorry about the photos being in the kitchen, it was too cold to take photos outside. I'll try to take it over to the Space Center and get some photos of it with the real deal next week maybe.

Nice. I have the 1/96 Revell kit that I'm planning to build out like SA-500-F/D. It has a whole load of little differences from any flown configuration, but, since most of the models are based on 500-F, it is the one time that the S-II is correctly modeled.

One small thing you might consider tweaking, the S-IC of the rocket in Huntsville doesn't have the flag on the LOX tank.

Looking forward to some pictures with it and the real deal.

You know, as many times as I've been around that thing, I've honestly never noticed. Also, the decals I used were scaled down from the Estes kit, since those included were terrible.

My nephew works at MSFC and has told me that the vibration test bed is now a rusting hulk. They were trying to see if they could use it for Ares [which may be a moot point now].

Did the actual 500-F have the air foils on the fin fairings as depicted on the Revell model?

Just as a reminder, I'm clearing out my excess unbuilt models. Yell if you want a 25th anniversary 1/96 Saturn V, a 30th Anniversary flying Estes 1/100 Saturn V of the various Saturn V's by Airfix and Monogram dating back to 1976. I also have ONE Airfix Saturn 1b in 1/144 left. An oldie but a goodie. You can e-mail me off list at divemaster@pobox.com
