Adam Savage to build full-scale replica of Apollo spacecraft hatch

Adam Savage is preparing to make Apollo history — literally.

The Mythbuster, maker and host of Science Channel's "Savage Builds," Savage has partnered with the National Air and Space Museum to create a full-scale replica of the crew hatch from an Apollo command module, the spacecraft that flew astronauts to and from the moon.

The build, to be conducted in front of the public at the Washington, D.C. museum on July 18, is part of the Smithsonian's celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing.

The whole package of component parts of the hatch in 3D-printable format (and other formats) is available for free download.

Tested has not released the build video yet, but here is one from Fran Blanche, who contributed a part to the hatch and who was there that day:

I also attended, thinking that I would write an article about the build, but as it was not done as a stage show (so no public commentary by Adam) and because I could not stay to the end for a possible interview when he was done, that idea did not come to be.

Here, though, are a few of my photos from that day.

And here is a photo from the National Air and Space Museum (via Twitter) of the hatch after the build was complete.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, Adam Savage and the Smithsonian Institution collaborated on Project Egress, a plan to create a LIFE-SIZE replica of the Apollo 11 command module hatch! The build entailed hours of planning, scanning and organizing the 40-plus artists who would contribute parts, and it all culminated on July 18, 2019, when Adam and a team of makers assembled the hatch LIVE at the National Air and Space Museum!
