This occurs when a clear coat is sprayed over paint that has not cured. If you spray a clear coat over uncured white paint, the gas that is released during the curing process is trapped below the surface of the clearcoat, and turns yellow.

In some the unpainted white plastic has yellowed; in some the white paint has yellowed and finally some with clear coat have yellowed. In very old models the paint has sometimes cracked - clear coat or not. I think the only way to prevent damage like this is to keep them away from UV light. I would be interested in others' experience as I now have hardwood space models that I'd like to keep from yellowing.

If you use model paint, don't put the model in bright sunlight and very important don't SMOKE in the house. Smoke is a crime for models as the nicotine will blanket on your models.
ea757grrl Member Posts: 729 From: South Carolina Registered: Jul 2006	posted 04-26-2010 02:09 PM Many friends of mine in the model-construction hobby who use hobby paints like to mix in a couple drops of blue paint to their bottles of white paint before they airbrush white coats. It isn't enough to change the color; just enough to stave off yellowing down the road.
tegwilym Member Posts: 2331 From: Sturgeon Bay, WI Registered: Jan 2000	posted 04-27-2010 12:49 PM My plastic is turning yellow on the "wrap-around" parts of my Revell 1/96 Saturn V. The other plastic is still white. Oh well... I'll just have to get that 4D cut-away model when it's out!
