Was wondering if anyone knows much about the MPC Sea King Helicopter which also depicts Apollo astronaut recovery? I found this model on eBay and of course have never heard of MPC. Was wondering if this model is rare? A decent model?

I haven't received it yet and just took a shot by bidding on it. I see another on there for a Buy It Now price of like $75. Luckily I paid about $60 less for this one. Can't find out anything else about it on the net

That's a 1971 reboxing of the venerable 1:72 Airfix Sea King. MPC reboxed a lot of Airfix kits for the US market back in the day. It was a pretty good kit for the late 1960s, but it's long since surpassed by the better Fujimi Sea Kings (or the recent Revell-Germany Sea King, which requires a bit of work to turn into a proper SH-3D).

I've seen a lot of Airfix Sea Kings (and even have the Apollo 7 boxing of the kit in the stash upstairs), but had never seen the MPC "Old 66" variant until I checked eBay the other day, so I'm guessing it's sort of scarce now. Hold on to it; it's still a neat collector's item.

Or you could have Steve Nichols turn it into "history in miniature" and be amazed at the detail of his work and this model.

I could be biased however as that is what he did for me. Take a look at this thread for photos (near the bottom).

Thanks so much for the information. I'll definitely hold on to it. I just thought it was kind of neat that it also includes the basket and an astronaut. It would be cool to make a diorama out of.

I'd really like to see it made into a diorama. People's work on here building is just outstanding! I'd hate to post any of my models compared to theirs!

Didn't Airfix also have a kit version?

Airfix issued the Sea King as both a helicopter meant to represent the Apollo 7 recovery (#63) and as "Old 66" with retouched box artwork and decals. It's really cool and dramatic artwork, too, and it's fun to look at the two boxings side by side to see the artwork changes.

I have the Airfix Apollo 7 variant in my own stash for collecting purposes, but I like the shape, fit and detail of the Fujimi kit a lot better.

(Incidentally, new decals to represent "Old 66" in both 1:48 and 1:72 will become available very soon...stay tuned.)
