Has anyone seen any of the 1980s concept models for the Strategic Defense Initiative appear for sale either direct or at auction?

I am looking for desktop size contractor models of space based lasers, brilliant pebbles etc.

There are some lovely models of satellites and planetary probes, Hubble etc from NASA and Russia but nothing from the SDI era.

Are there any good resin or plastic kits on this subject? Many thanks.

Revell did produce two concept SDI kits in the 80s, as far as I can remember. You might find these on eBay.

I have a Teal Ruby AF Project 888 IR satellite model made for Rockwell. It was scheduled to be launched with the first shuttle out of Vandenberg.

The Challenger accident changed everything. The satellite was never launched and the original vehicle is in long term storage somewhere as a specimen for spacecraft in long term storage. (?)

Not for sale though.

The Teal Ruby satellite is now on public display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, inside the payload bay of the museum's new Space Shuttle Exhibit.

Thanks for all the info - will check out eBay.

Great model of the Teal Ruby AF Project 888 IR satellite model. How did you acquire it?

Be great to see a few more of these items become available.

Perhaps I should think about a scratchbuild of brilliant pebbles or a Zenith Star. My constraint is time - do you know if there are stock items of prefab solar panels, etc. available anywhere?.

Lazy I know but it can make the difference between starting a project and actually completing it!

The Teal Ruby model was picked up from a fellow space model geek in Colorado years ago. I need to add solar panels and a scope protector to the model. eBay has some 'real' panels that are like 2" x 3/4", haven't tried them but they are cheap and look good.

If you get a chance to stop by a good countertop distributor, check out some of their commercial type formica samples for model panels.
