I'm a long-dormant space enthusiast returning to modelbuilding after several decades of inactivity. (Hopefully, my new models will turn out better than the ones I made as a youth! LOL)Being a fan of Gene Cernan, I'd like to build a replica of the Apollo 17 CM/SM/LM, using an exisiting Apollo 11 or 13 model as a starting point. My two questions for the resident experts are: 1) What are the visual difference b/w Apollos 11/13 and 17? I'm having difficulty finding any close-up photos of Apollo 17 -- partly due to the night launch and partly due to the fact that most of the write-up in print or online focus on the lunar rover. 2) Which is the best (i.e. most-accurate) base model to start with? Prefer 1:48 scale. Thanks much. |

If you're looking for 1/48, the only place to get a reasonably priced one is Realspacemodels.com. Glenn makes an excellent version in resin. If you've never worked in resin before, it's an unforgiving medium, so be careful. At the same time, Glenn also offers 1/48 plans by David Weeks of the Apollo CSM. These plans detail the difference between each and every Apollo CSM, from Apollo 1 through ASTP. Buy Rick Sternbach's decals, and you're well on your way to creating whatever CSM that you'd like. So, when are you going to build the entire stack in 1/48? Cheerz! Tracy
