Does anyone know the difference between green palm Orlan gloves vs. yellow palm ones?I was told that green ones were just for training purposes and I always saw cosmonauts on EVAs with the yellow palmed gloves. But throughout my investigation I also figured out that also these green palm gloves were used during EVAs. Also one of the differences I observed is that the K-Version does have this pocket on the back of the hand which covers the MLI. In the KS Version these pockets seem not to be present anymore. Does someone have a more detailed information about this? |

As it was told to me at the time, the green palms were to distinguish the gloves being made for the (then new) International Space Station program, while the golden rod palms were for the Mir space station. Once the overlap between the two programs ended, golden rod palms began being used on the ISS.I do not know if the explanation was valid; it could have been pure supposition by someone else, but it was what was told to someone who worked with the hardware. |

This is the way I believe it breaks out: - D/DM (7K) Brown
- DMA (8K) Brown
- M (10K) Green
- MK/MKS (10KM) Yellow (note that finger tips on the KM are black vice green)

I think with all the pieces of the puzzle, the mystery is starting to unravel. I also believe that it is more difficult to get information about Russian hardware than about others. Although I know someone who worrked at NPP Zvezda (manufacturer) and has already given me some information, this information you have provided is new. Thank you! |

Thank you Philip for that interesting summary in the Spaceflight magazine. It indeed gives a good overview related to Orlan's history.Nevertheless the specific hardware related info concerning the "coloring" of the gloves palms is still to be confirmed. Why these different colors did even appear, and does the explanation from Scott (SpaceAholic) is the true reason? (I don't want to put it in question, I just want to be sure that the colors do also refer on the different version.) |
