Just came across an interesting news release by The M3 Group, Ltd, dated Dec. 8, 1977, titled, "Wrecking Company Saves Gemini Mementos." It reads in part from Cape Canaveral, FL — Captain Walter Schirra, the only astronaut to fly in all three spacecraft... Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo, will return to the Florida space coast Dec. 13 to present plaques commemorating the Gemini program. The plaques are being presented by the Cuyahoga Wrecking Corporations, the firm which is dismantling part of Pad 19, in recognition of the historical significance of these materials from the pad. A portion of the gantry will be left intact for viewing by visitors to the spaceport. Material contained on the plagues comes from the gantry. During a special ceremony to be held in Cocoa Beach, FL, Captain Schirra will talk about the contributions of Gemini and will present plaques to several officials from NASA, the Air Force and contractors. Eventually, about 200 plaques will be sent by the Cuyahoga Wrecking Corp. as gifts to the Gemini astronauts, officials who participated in the Gemini program, and heads of state who have visited Cape Canaveral for launches of manned missions. I've not seen that many of the Pad 19 memento gift presentations and was wondering if anyone else was able to acquire them. While I do know that some veteran astronauts have them in their own collections, I've not seen any others in a long time. |
