I notice that the Apollo 15 EVA helmets were recovered. Was the justification for this to provide shielding from the sun during Al Worden's later spacewalk? Were all EVA helmets recovered from the lunar surface? |

Based on earlier posts, the lunar extravehicular visor assemblies (LEVA) worn by David Scott (Apollo 15), John Young (Apollo 16) and Gene Cernan (Apollo 17) were used by Al Worden, Ken Mattingly and Ron Evans, respectively, for their deep space EVAs. In addition, according to the National Air and Space Museum's online collection inventory, the LEVAs from Apollo 11 (both Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin), Jim Irwin (from Apollo 15, as mentioned) and Harrison Schmitt from Apollo 17 were also returned to Earth. From other sources, it appears that Jim Lovell's Apollo 13 LEVA and Charlie Duke's Apollo 16 LEVA were also returned. The Apollo 12 and Apollo 14 assemblies were left on the surface. I could not find a reference to Fred Haise's LEVA from Apollo 13. |

I recall last seeing Jim Lovell's Apollo 13 CDR LEVA at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. |

I wonder if Haise's LEVA was put back into circulation as it was in pristine condition and reused during a later mission or training. I'm thinking Lovell's may not have been reused due to the stripe and logos applied to it. | |
