I recently acquired one of these "VAB Hurricane Recovery Team Award" presentations, which purports to include a cutout of metal siding from NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This metal cutout is from one of the original VAB panels that was installed in 1965 and was detached during Hurricane Frances on 9/12/2004. Does anyone know any more about the history of these particular cards? Is this an official NASA presentation? I only ask because of the nature of the item itself. The "card" is more of a heavyweight paper (though it cannot support the weight of the metal cutout) and it is hand cut (one edge of mine is uneven and includes some of the white excess). And the metal cutout is attached to the card by a piece of Scotch tape. I have no specific reason to doubt the authenticity of the siding cutout — it looks like other documented pieces of VAB siding I have seen and own — but I am surprised by the style of the presentation, if indeed it originates from NASA. |

It has a certain homegrown quality to it. At first glance, I would not think it originated from NASA. |

I did some research when I first saw those cards auctioned a few sales back and believed them to be home made, and not a NASA-issued gift. I keep bidding on them because I think they are neat, but limit my interest given they (likely) weren't an official space administration item. |

Okay, so how do you know the metal isn't off some doublewide trailer and not the VAB? |

You should likely ask the seller, not me. |

I took mine apart and the piece inside is steel so in my opinion it was a very well made double wide. |

As mentioned, the piece I received matches other VAB siding panel pieces I have, which have more solid provenance. So I have no reason to question the authenticity of the metal cutout; I was only curious about the origins of the "team award." |

A similar display is currently for sale on eBay (202268120017). What's interesting is that this particular one appears to have an additional "Presented to" section of text on the card, which is the first time I have seen that variation. Maybe the seller and/or original recipient (who's name is covered in the listing) would be able to add more background to the presentation's original creator. |

Good eye, haven’t seen that before either. Has anyone just simply asked Donnis? He might be able to add insight. |

I have four of these VAB displays that I purchased directly from NASA and contractor workers who were presented with them. They are legitimate pieces of the VAB, there is no reason for anyone to fake these displays because they're not worth much money. |
