I have always been interested in the Apollo missions, particularly Apollo 11. I have been lucky enough to collect some of the flight plan pages and have been wondering... where are all the other pages?

How many other cS members have pages from this mission? Would it ever be possible to track the whereabouts of the hundreds of pages of this (in my opinion) extremely historical document? Should there not be a database set up so that it could, at least, be possible to know their whereabouts?

I'm sure that with a bit of detective work it would actually be possible (with the cooperation of the owners/sellers) to track these pages down! To what end I do not know, but it would be interesting. (Maybe put the whole flight plan back together in 2069!? I'll be 100 yrs old! I'm sure that future generations will be amazed that we actually divided it up in the first place!)

I know that I have contributed to the fact that there is a market for these flight plans to be split and sold, but when you think about it, it's like dividing up the Magna Carta or the Declaration of Independence and never being able to put them back together.

Update to the status of the Apollo 11 Flight Plan in 2020:

While the balance of remaining pages has been sold, over a dozen pages remain missing or reduced to grainy thumbnail images on past auction pages.

While intact digital versions of the July 1, 1969 edition are available, these do not contain the pen and ink changes made prior to flight and the handwritten notations made in flight.

Flight copies included Section 3 pages 1 to 35, 9 pages of star charts (not in ground copies), Section 6, and 4 pages of Mission Rules and the Photography Timeline. The Mission Rules and Photographic timeline were also not in ground copies.

A low quality digital version sourced from the National Archives does have the pen and ink changes and pages sourced from elsewhere. It was the backup to the flight copy, so it did not contain the inflight notations.

A more dire situation exists with the LM Timeline Book that didn't sell last year. While the scanned archival copy (also low quality) is the flight copy at least 4 pages of the main body are missing (the last tab with the transfers) as well as the six Flight Plan pages that are at the beginning the document. (3-62 to 67 of the July 1 Flight Plan plus P&I and any inflight notations).

Purported copies of the LM Timeline sold on Amazon showing the title page and containing blank pages have tricked at least a few buyers into thinking they were buying a copy of the document, so beware.

Thanks for that summary, above. Disappointing to learn that a copy of the flown Flight Plan, with in-flight notations does not exist. I tried to track the sale of pages for a few years, but it proved difficult and many were sold privately which would make a solid tracking effort fairly tough.

All times are CT (US)
