The article about the Apollo 15 Hasselblad EDC up for auction interested me because despite many hours of poring over Apollo photographs I've never noticed the numbers on them before.

A quick scan through the various image sources on the web shows the following distribution of numbers

  • 23 - Apollo 17
  • 31 - Apollo 15
  • 32 - Apollo 17
  • 33 - Apollo 16
  • 38 - Apollo 15
  • 39 - Apollo 16
I can't seem to find any such numbering on photographs taken on the surface in Apollos 11-13.

Anyone know why they started to number the plates later on in the missions?

Editor's note: For discussion of the cited auction, see: [WestLicht Gallery] Jim Irwin's Hasselblad camera.

  • 31 39 and 23 were CDR Hasselblads
  • 38 33 and 32 were LMP Hasselblads

There were also Reseau numbers on some of the Skylab and ASTP photos. Here are a few examples:
  • 48 - Skylab 2 (SL2-05-454)
  • 42 - Skylab 3 (SL3-122-2587)
  • 50 - Skylab 3 (SL3-114-1625)
  • 42 - Skylab 4 (SL4-143-4677)
  • 44 - ASTP (AST-16-1268)

All times are CT (US)
