Can someone provide me with or guide me to information regarding the command bands on the J series mission Apollo EVA suits. What were they made from? When viewing film of crews training they appear to be a shiny material, was this the case and what was the material? Were they just red colored beta cloth? Thanks for any help. |

I do not believe that they are Betacloth. The degradation on Shepard's leads me to believe that it has a nylon component, similar to the flag, but let me investigate further. The key is determining where the stripes were applied, at ILC or in Houston at CSD. ------------------ Cathleen S. Lewis |

Correction, I should have said polyester, not nylon. |

It's hard to know for sure given differences in lighting and camera settings, but Shepard's and Young's look like two different materials. |

Thank you all for the information so far. The Shepard band looks to be printed red like the mission insignia on beta cloth and through wear seems to rub away. Looks like for the J missions some type of protective covering was used, I've also noticed what looks to be a protective covering on the NASA vector and the U.S. flag beta insignia on the training suits. Is this right? |

I have a set of these (two arm bands, two leg bands) in my collection that were given to me 20 some years ago by suit tech Al Rochford. They were used in training. I cannot say with 100% accuracy what they are made of. I guess I always presumed beta material. The stripe itself does appear to be a reddish colored plastic coating that has the beta like material sewn on the sides and back. |
