I purchased this shuttle-era Canon camcorder remote from an eBay seller: While the remote is tagged as "Class I," or "flight" hardware, the seller was not sure whether it actually flew or not. As seen below, the remote features a tab of blue Velcro for attachment within an orbiter's crew cabin:  I'm positive that the remote was manufactured by Canon for use with a camcorder, and that a variety of Canon camcorders flew on STS missions in the 90's. Beyond that, though, I can't find anything about the item. So, is anyone familiar with the remote, particularly with regard to its flight history? If not, is there anyone at NASA I could contact for help without involving a FOIA request? |

The NAS9-17540 on the label relates to Boeing's Flight Equipment Processing Contract (FEPC). A few details are here.The term of choice for this contract certainly suggests a tie to shuttle flown material but of course that doesn't help with an individual item like your remote. The duct tape holding the battery door on makes me a bit suspect of the Class 1 designation but who knows!? |

The serial number means that there were at least four of them. But my experience from working stowage for Spacehab on the Shuttle Mir missions, we flew many camcorder bags (these contained camcorders, cables, lenses, video cassettes, LCD monitors, remotes, etc), up to 5 on mission. There were many types of bag configurations, the contents depending on the needs of the mission. So there may have been many more remotes in the inventory. As for finding out if it flew, you won't be able to find an individual who can remember a particular serial number. As for finding out from a FOIA request: - To me, this is frivolous, and a waste of government resources.
- It wouldn't be in any direct shuttle flight documentation since it was a part of kit. The shuttle documentation would say a particular camcorder bag configuration flew with a certain serial number. Another drawing would be required to determine contents of a bag configuration and yet another document, the procedure that recorded the work of putting the bag together, which would have recorded the serial number of the remote.

That is something I saw a lot of, whether it was duct or aluminum tape. It was a way ensuring that covers on COTS items didn't come off. |

Many thanks for the info, David and Jim! Judging from the remote's "well-used" appearance and everything you told me, I'm leaning toward "probably flown," but it's a neat item regardless. I'll definitely avoid a FOIA for this one considering how costly and complex it could become.Thanks again! | |
