As the 50th anniversary of Valentina Tereshkova's historic flight approaches, I am attempting to construct a working model of the VZOR used on Vostok 6. The descriptions are tantalizingly vague. Has any collector disassembled a Soyuz one and noted the dimensions and placement of the optical elements? I can find no usable details anywhere. I cannot even find a clear representation of the view. What was the magnification? Was the image inverted? My best guess is U.S. patent #4892399 "Chul H. Ahn". Sold as a door viewer, more similar to a camera-obscura than a peephole. Any information or leads would be greatly appreciated. |

Jim, Vostok information is incomplete at best. I and many others have tried over the years to obtain any drawings or narratives on how a system aboard Vostok worked, only to come up empty handed. The Soviet Union policy back then was to keep everything a secret. Very few notes were made and any that were, were soon destroyed. I would love to see a Vostok Familiarization Manual, but apparently no such document exists. |

Thanks for the reply. Soviet secrecy.I suspected as much. I understand that the current Soyuz-TMA still uses a VZOR attached to the docking periscope. My hope is that not much has changed with its fundamental lens arrangement. Do the outer lens elements survive reentry? Have you heard of any detailed diagrams of the TMA's optical alignment design? Is there a collector with flown TMA parts that may be able to post measurements? |

Have you seen this page? I do not have exact measurements but the Vzor device is slightly larger than a coffee can. |

I have one piece of a circular lens that was purported to be part of a Soyuz optical system. The lens appears to be heavily polarized and rotates within the frame. |
