collectSPACE Buzz Aldrin refutes space sale, states he is keeping his moon memorabiliaA New York auction house is set to sell more than 300 space artifacts on Monday (March 25), including original documents that were flown to the moon and used to carry out the first manned lunar landing. But contrary to recent headlines prompted by Bonhams' upcoming "Space History Sale," the Apollo 11 moonwalker whose lunar-traveled checklists and flight plans are being offered is not the one doing the selling. "I am not offering any items for sale from my current collection of Apollo 11 articles in the Bonhams auction," astronaut Buzz Aldrin clarified in a written statement sent to collectSPACE.com on Saturday. "The Apollo 11 items being auctioned on Monday are being resold from auctions that took place in 2007 or earlier at the instigation of my ex-wife and her daughter who acted as my attorney and business manager." Editor's note: Buzz Aldrin contacted collectSPACE on Saturday (March 23) wanting to correct the public record regarding the Bonhams' Space History Sale in New York on Monday. Recent news articles had suggested he had consigned the Apollo 11 flight plan pages, checklists and other memorabilia that are part of the auction, which he had not. Beyond the immediate sale though, Aldrin also wanted to convey he is no longer selling his Apollo artifacts. "I have not auctioned any Apollo 11-related items owned by me for a number of years," Aldrin told collectSPACE. "I do not plan to do so now even though all Apollo astronauts have been authorized by law to own the items we brought back from the moon.""I have no intention of selling any more of the historical Apollo 11 items in my possession for the remainder of my life," Aldrin added. "I intend to pass a portion of these items on to my children and to loan the most important items for permanent display in suitable museums around the country." |

Any opinions on this development being part of reason lots 151, 154, 155 and 156 not sell (not meet reserve?) at the Bonham's auction?These were various sheets from the Apollo 11 Flight Plan and dictionary and signed by Col. Aldrin. |

Actually, I think Aldrin's announcement would've made those lots more likely to sell than not (less future supply in the market place); I doubt most bidders were even aware of his very recent clarifications.(Or is it possible bidders were in fact aware of his announcement, and thinking Aldrin's ex-wife and daughter-in-law were behind the sales, were less willing to bid those lots up?) |

Aldrin's statement seems eminently reasonable to me. From what I understand about his contract with his most recent ex, she basically gets (at least) half of the proceeds of anything he sells. However, he can will the items to whomever he chooses, most likely his biological children, and upon his death they would get full possession of whatever items he wills to them. |

From watching the auction live, I think there were reasonably substantial 5 figure sums being bid for lots 154-156 but just not enough to meet the reserves (approx 80% of low estimates judging by other lots).There was interest but it didn't match the sellers/Bonhams perceived valuations. A fair few other lots didn't sell aswell. | |
