I'm hoping for a response from Sy Liebergot will respond to this, but anybody else who has direct knowledge I would appreciate their input also. The Apollo space program was one of my biggest inspirations for becoming an electrical engineer, and fighting hard to meet that goal. Apollo 13 particularly inspired me, because the engineers on the ground were the ones who took an impossible situation where by all the universal laws the astronauts should have been lost, and brought them safely home. I knew then, that I wanted to be one of the real problem solvers in the world, the ones who may not get the glory, but actually make a difference and accomplish something useful. The EECOM controller is the man who most closely represents my particular area of interest, and so one thing I have always wanted to do was to recreate that console position. Finding detailed pictures of that particular Apollo era console (not the Shuttle era modified console) has been extremely difficult. I live in Seattle, and I know Sy got one of the consoles that were in storage for the Museam of Flight here. It is labeled as the EECOM console, and I was wondering if it was THE console used for Apollo or not. I know this may seem a silly project, but again, Apollo had a huge impact on my life, as I know it did on others, so this project is something I want to do to honor that. I appreciate your interest. You need a copy of PHO-TR155 MCC Operational Configuration--the covers the entire B30 MCC. My copy is for Apollo 15. If you can receive a 22MB file, I'll be happy to send it to you. |

Somewhat long after you first posted David, but along the same lines, I also have an interest in the EECOM position, specifically for Apollo 13 and have been working on a graphic of the Apollo 13 EECOM console.A downloadable version can be found here. The data on the monitors (drawn from Sy's "must have" book) and the Com Panels layouts are reasonably accurate I believe. The Summary Message Keyboard is partially complete. The Display Request Keyboard is a complete mystery and so I have partly used information from another controller position from A14 and imagination to arrange and label those displays in their respective grids. The Limit Sense lights layout is also largely unknown and has been drawn from the A15 version of Philco document PHO-TR 155, monitor data and a couple of indistinct photos of the console during the mission. What would be handy, if anybody knows of one, is an earlier version of the PHO-TR 155 document - to be specific, the H2 mission revision C of TR155 from March 1970 - and any other documents, schematics or photos that show the panels as they were configured for the A13 mission. Needless to say, such specific information is most likely long lost after all these years or otherwise unavailable... but you never know! | |
