Would anyone be able to tell me when the Saturn V first stage F-1 engines had their "batting" (the external insulation) attached, was it prior to rollout from the Vehicle Assembly Building or was it at the pad?Out of courtesy, I must mention that I posted the same question to another group a few days ago but didn't receive any replies. Many thanks. |

Well, then, let this be a lesson as to where you should post your questions next time. The insulation was installed in the VAB. As per the "Stage Flow at KSC" section of F-1 Rocket Engine Technical Manual: Engine Data (page 1-78, which is page 210 in the PDF): The barge arrives at the KSC dock where the stage, nozzle extensions, loose equipment, and thermal insulation boxes are off-loaded. The stage is towed from the dock to the Vertical Assembly Building (VAB). The nozzle extensions, loose equipment, and thermal insulation boxes are loaded on low-bed trailers and transported to the VAB. The stage is removed from the stage transporter and erected onto the Launch Umbilical Tower (LUT) where the engine visual receiving inspection, loose equipment installation, modification and maintenance, stage and engine leak and functional tests, and thermal insulation installations are accomplished. These tasks are conducted concurrently with the Saturn V vehicle assembly and testing. |

And, as an interesting side-note, the insulation took a very long time to install.I read in a mostly-unrelated report F-1 Engine Thermal Insulation investigated the feasibility of reducing the installation time and complexity of the thermal blanket installation. A metal shield was recommended that would replace the current cocoon over the engine and would result in a reduction of installation time from 1,120 manhours to approximately 840 manhours. It was not clear in the report as to whether that was 1,120 hours per engine or for the whole set. |
