I recently acquired an Apollo cryogenic fan control system. I'm pretty damn chuffed with it, but would love to find out a bit more about it.

It was part of one of the Apollo command and service modules built by North American (contract NAS 9-150), and I think I've figured out it's Block II, though I can't remember whether that was based on the contract, or something else. Please disabuse me of this notion if necessary!

Obviously it dates from before Apollo 14 (when they removed the fans after Apollo 13 incident), so I think that means it's one of CSM-98 to CSM-109.

Main question — presumably all the flown CSMs wouldn't have had any such parts removed before being put on display wherever they are?

Which would mean this must be from one of CSMs -99, -100, -102 and -105. Does anyone know if any of these were broken up for parts? Or does anyone know of any resource where I could find out which CSM it came from by part/serial number?

On the part itself, it would have sat behind this panel, but I'm trying to figure out the configuration, and can only find overall system diagrams, rather than one that shows the connections to the fan control system. Does anyone know of any resources besides nassp.sourceforge.net for this sort of research?

Thanks very much for any help!

No clue which of several potential components (specifically) your referring to without more details but the bulk of the architecture for the cited application was integral to the SM Sector IV bay and would have been jettisoned prior to reentry.

I saw that in the RR auction last month and thought it was a great piece of Apollo hardware. In fact I tried for it, but was quickly outbid.

Here are some specific details from the listing: Apollo Command/Service Module Cryogenic Fan Control System, measuring 7″ x 4.5" x 2″, with a tag on the top reading: "Box Assembly Cryogenic Fan Control System, Part V37-447580-301, Mfr. Code 03953, Contr. NAS-9-150, Serial 06362AAG5237." The front of the unit has twelve fuses marked "XF1" through "XF12." Two yellow-capped ports on the side are marked "J1" and "J2."

Thanks for your replies.

So, if jettisoned on re-entry, all the more likely that this one is from CSM-98, -99, -100, -102 or -105 (unless it's not actually Block II). Probably -99 or -100 since the others are only display and the service module would also be on display?

There's no real need for it to be "from" a particular vehicle. It is more likely either a spare or a unit used in testing. Another possibility is that it had been in a vehicle but was removed due to failure. In any case not flown, as it is from the Service Module (as noted).

Here's the original auction listing itself, which might be useful.
