Topic: Fate of pre-glass cockpit space shuttle hardware

When the old shuttle cockpit panels with traditional style meters were switched with the new glass cockpits, what happened to the old panels? Are they on display somewhere? Or still in stock at some NASA center? |

More than likely if they haven't been recycled, they would have stayed at the Rockwell plant in Palmdale since the changes were made during OMDP refits. Only ones NASA might have would be the simulator panels.The changes were pretty much limited to the center display panels. The digital computer keypad, side consoles and overhead ones would have remained more or less the same as far as I know. |

Typically, when an aircraft is modified/upgraded by a contractor, the old LRU's are removed, tagged and either sent back to the "owner" or disposed of by the contractor doing the work. This should be spelled out int he Statement of Work between the Gov't and the contractor. I would guess that they went back to KSC as spares for the other Shuttles until they were no longer needed once all of the Shuttles were modified... |

Also wondering if the hardware of the shuttle computer system (developed in the seventies) was updated from time to time (like more processing power). |

These links might be helpful to you in learning about the Shuttle computers and their evolution; one major change was the shift from magnetic core memory to semiconductor-based storage. |

Man that would be cool to get a hold of one of the old shuttle computers with the magnetic core memory since they should have seen a full removal when switched to the newer system. I would assume they ended up in a museum...or will. |
