I found the company who made the Navy-style space shuttle Discovery ball caps as seen on orbit during the STS-124 and STS-131 missions.

No caps were seen during STS-133 (the commander was Air Force). According to Richard's Military Post Exchange, which provides the caps, STS-134 and STS-135 commanders ordered them, the earlier as evidenced by this photo.

I was able to make it down for the launch of STS-135, and meet up with my brother who flew a satellite company exec down the night before. Ahead of the trip, I thought it would be great to order a couple of these caps for the occasion.Well, when I got them just days before the launch I found out that the ones on the front page of their website are not the right style. The caps the crews order are the "Old Salt" style on another page of their site. I called Richard's and was pleasantly surprised when they told me they had a new batch made just that morning and it would be no problem to overnight them to me. Totally my fault for ordering the right ones, but these guys could not have been more accomodating. I received the correct items the next day and was off to the launch with them in hand. These are well made, great looking caps and I've received more than a few compliments while wearing mine (pretty much every day since launch day). We even took a few seconds to face my pre-set camera for a shot with Atlantis lifting off. So I would highly recommend Richard's Military Post Exchange for these absolutely authentic souvenirs from the last shuttle missions. The fine workmanship is matched only by their unbeatable desire to please their customers. |

Militarygifts.com updated their shuttle ball cap selections. You can now get any of the four remaining orbiters (including Enterprise) with either the OV designation or any of the missions flown. I just received my Discovery ball cap (with a Navy Surface Warfare Officer emblem vice the astronaut wings and OV-103) and it looks great! |
