Sweet memories: M&M's flew with SpaceShipOne 10 years ago

The milk chocolate candies that "melt in your mouth, not your hand" helped to make commercial spaceflight history 10 years ago on Saturday (Oct. 4).

M&M's, the candy-coated chocolates produced by Mars, Inc., were not only onboard SpaceShipOne in 2004 when it claimed the $10 million Ansari X PRIZE, the confectioner was one of the sponsors of the prize-winning flights, too. An M&M character was added to the spacecraft's fuselage and those who came to watch the flights at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California received a special mix of the candies as a souvenir.

I've heard a story that Neil Armstrong carried a roll of "Life Savers" in one of his pockets aboard Apollo 11. Anyone know what flavor?

Here's something that also flew on both flights, and was signed by the respective pilots...

I've read the roll was in his pocket as he headed out to the launch pad, but haven't seen what became of them or what flavor they were.

That said, I've heard from astronauts that cherry Life Savers were a favorite anti-nausea solution when riding the centrifuge or flying on parabolic training flights. Maybe Armstrong had the candies for the same purpose.

Sy, that makes four cS'ers I know about that own 1 of the 10 flown bills. You, myself, Robert, and Rich (all common knowledge since they have displayed their bills online).

I wonder if there are any additional cS'ers that own the remaining six bills. Still, I find that to be an amazing ratio.

Amazing, yes. But not all that surprising because those 10 bills made their debut for sale at the 2005 UACC astronaut signing convention in New Jersey where the vast majory of attendees were likely members of this site. I bought two myself (don't own either today). Ah... The good ol' days!

Jason, didn't you recently put feelers out to reacquire one of the flown bills? If so, I hope one fell into your lap (again).
