I was hoping I might be able to find more info on this piece? What I know about it is from the Rockwell id tag on its side. The picture of the fabric id tag appears very dated. Would anyone be able to identify this to a particular shuttle? Thank you very much.

From 1978? Columbia?

If you google "box assembly forward power controller" you get this: Electrical Power Distribution and Control.

You suggested Columbia? I would love that as then it had a chance of making it to orbit. From the date I thought maybe Enterprise or Columbia but I would love it if someone much smarter than me (everyone) and knew the numbers and could provide any more info.

The orbiters have distinct serial numbers - OV for orbiter vehicle then a number. OV 101 and 102 were Enterprise and Columbia respectively.

Challenger was known as a structural test article before it was turned into an orbiter (STA 99 became OV 99). Can you find any of these types of markings? Great piece, good luck!

You could try sending in a FOIA.

Because of the date and also because I'm not sure that Enterprise was powered up (but I may be wrong).

As someone who has personal experience with FOIA requests (and now teaches about FOIA as part of First Amendment law), I strongly recommend using FOIA requests only after you've exhausted every other means of trying to find out what you need to know.

By law, FOIA automatically triggers a process that the responding agency is required to follow. It is a glacial process with a set protocol. (Forget what the FOIA law says about required response times; that's seldom been the case in my experience. It takes a lot longer.) I've been through it, and it's slow and potentially very costly since you have to pay for search fees and duplication costs (and those can mount up in a hurry depending on the pay grade of the person who happens to perform the search).

Before going through the FOIA process, please make some non-FOIA inquiries to the people at NASA. It's surprising what you can get with just a polite inquiry to the right person, and you'll probably get the same information a lot faster and with a lot less hassle than through FOIA.

Don't fret! Nothing says you can't still ask around for information. You can also cancel a FOIA request if you find what you need elsewhere.

I do not see any numbers with "OV 101 or 102" specifically. There are number sets ending in 101, but also 002, and 001 and so on. I thought I'd post some closer pictures.

You have a decent bit of aerospace technology but its doubtful it was ever flown (this item was bulk scrapped out of NAR in the 80's having been obsoluted due to a design change) - it was recovered from Bill Scripps who passed away last year and resold to local LA electronics/surplus dealer.

Thank you, very informative! It would be nice to know if it had flown and if so on which orbiter. But flown or not it is still so cool to look at early Shuttle history.

All times are CT (US)
