Since 2004 I have had a LM COAS (Crewman Optical Alignment Sight) in my collection. Although I long suspected it may be flown, I was finally able to find photographic proof.

My LM COAS was flown on the first manned flight of the LM on Apollo 9, and used by Jim McDivitt for docking with the Command Module among other operations. You can see information about the LM COAS artifact, and detailed comparison and discussion.

Based on cross comparison of the surface abrasion/scuff patterns alone, pretty indisputable - congrats John. One lesson learned for the rest of us, be very careful when cleaning artifacts of unknown provenance to facilitate ID's like this (in my opinion unless cleaning is absolutely nessessary to conserve the artifact its best to leave it undisturbed).

Wow -- congrats John.

Jealous!

Says a lot for diligent analysis and research that you and Scott are so great at.

John, congrats on your research paying off -- clearly a convincing case for the COAS to be flown.

Minor question: there are a couple of small white marks that appear on the COAS in the CDT photo but are absent from your artifact photo. Are these blemishes on the photo?

(Reference the 'upside down V' on the lower dial [clamp?] assembly as an example.)

That is dust from scanning the negative. I thought I would leave it as scanned.

Thanks for the kind remarks. It's always a thrill to discover something new about your artifacts.
