Looking at photos from STS-129, I noticed something odd behind Nicole Stott in the following photograph. Very much reminded of Captain Picard having various models of the Enterprise in his inner sanctum, it appears that a model sailing ship has made it to the ISS. |

The story behind this model ship is briefly described on Space.com: While on the space station, [Michael] Barratt also plans to assemble a model of the 18th century tall ship HM Bark Endeavour, after which the NASA space shuttle Endeavour was named."I plan to do some comparisons and contrasts between space voyaging and sea voyaging," Barratt said. |

It's worth noting of course that current on board astronaut Nick Patrick was born only 12 miles away or so from Capt. James Cook's birthplace in North Yorkshire, and spent his early years in that area visiting often the port of Whitby where three of Cook's voyages on the Endeavour departed from.Nick has voyaged a little further on board his Endeavour. I suspect Captain Cook would have approved! |

And to that end, from my interview with Patrick prior to his launch on STS-130: ...he also has a replica flag from the ship that gave Endeavour its name."I'm flying a reproduction of the red ensign that flew on the HM Bark Endeavour, which was Captain Cook's ship of discovery that he took to the Pacific. The ship he sailed when he discovered Hawaii," said Patrick. |

Neat! I bet he's not using regular old model glue (toxic and flammable!) to put it together up there! |

It is difficult enough for me to put a model together on Earth...I can't imagine how much more difficult it would be in zero G. But I would be willing to try. |

Model kit glue and paint can be messy enough at times - imagine using them in zero G. |
