Collins Radio out of Cedar Rapids had a hand in the communications architecture for all of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo flights. Some images of recent additions to the collection of manned spacecraft technology from Collins Radio Corp...The stack of grey/black equipment on the left of the first image are (2) Mercury Capsule UHF radio transmitter/receivers, the radio controller and a Command Receiver (which could also in an emergency have been used for voice). The "bling" on the right consists of (1) HF and (1) UHF Gemini transmitter receiver. Based on the model/part numbers these are either production representative/flight (or very close to the flown components).

In the process of cleaning up the artifacts for web entries and was just about to peel off some old nuisance masking tape from one of the Mercury radios before taking a second glance (shown in first image below).Tape indicates removal from Spacecraft 18 by Mcdonnell Aircraft Corp (which would be Aurora 7 - Scott Carpenters capsule). Possibly a pre-flight swap-out or flight May retain that nasty piece of tape after all...

I would bet that it's post-flight, and that a strip of tape was probably as good a way as any to label it back then.------------------ John Fongheiser President Historic Space Systems, http://www.space1.com |

Just sent a note to J.L. Pickering to ascertain if any close-out or inflight images of MA-7 exist showing the capsule equipment bay to the left of the pilot seat.I don't know if the capsule as currently displayed in Chicago permits viewer access to that location to see if the radio has been pulled. The radio came out of KSC... |

I think you've been accused of this before, but I'm very strongly beginning to think you're trying to pull an "Astronaut Farmer" and are building your very own spaceship, complete with mission control! Next you'll be exhibiting former astronauts in your collection. |
