I have Apollo 11 launch badge number 2 in my collection. I'm curious to know if someone on this site owns or knows where badge number 1 is?

Center Director Dr. Kurt Debus, by his executive secretary, kept many of the early-number issued badges for Apollo 11 and for other Apollo launch events. Many badges on hold by his office were also handled by KSC Deputy Director Miles Ross.

Ken, there where also a good number of launch passes with very low numbers kept by Arnold Richman and I am happy to have number 10.

That's right, Chuck, as I had forgotten about Arnold Richman as well since he was a high-ranking public affairs official. His office was able to distribute VIP badges as needed and/or requested by Debus, Ross, and Gordon Harris, in addition to their own.

Depicted below are nearly 50 badges issued for Apollo 11 throughout the last five decades from my own personal collections, all different in some way or another.

We've got firing room badges, VIP, press, on pad access, support areas, viewing site permits, anniversaries, special events, reunions, and even various membership cards and ticket issues. Many were used by myself and note the Armstrong and Aldrin signed items as well. It's almost a lifetime of collecting, however, I am still missing a few Apollo 11 badges that I know are here somewhere, including a rare Mission Control Center access badge to the Houston space center during the actual flight itself.

Let's see more badges here in commemorating the first manned lunar landing space voyage — bring them on!

Very nice, Ken!

Just one Apollo 11 badge in the collection here. Like with many of these Apollo 11 MCC badges there is some degradation to the lamination but, hey, "it was there." Always liked the hand-drawn image, unique to the Apollo 11 Mission Control badge.

Melvin Brooks was a flight controller with the Gemini program and later, the assistant Chief of Experiments Systems/Payload Operations for the Apollo Program.

On edit, and shame on me. There are TWO Apollo 11 badges in the collection.

Vice President Spiro Agnew's Apollo 11 personalized VIP launch pass, covered in some fun forensic research down-thread here (lots of other very cool badges too).

Wow, that’s an impressive collection, Ken! That Agnew badge is also a fine piece, David. Here's my collection of Apollo 11 related badges and access passes.

This is really cool thread. Nice collections! Does anyone know which specific pass/badge would be necessary to have been an observer/photographer in the walk-out area? I'm looking specifically in regards to the fenced in area directly to the left of the ramp during Apollo 11. Thanks!

If you were a news photographer, I think all you would have needed was the Apollo 11 press badge. They were bused over to the MSOB from the LC-39 Press Site with NASA public affairs escorts.

Are these all autopen or hand-signed (by Kurt Debus)?

All were printed with the same Debus signature.

Does anyone have an answer to my original question? Does badge number 01 exist? Perhaps a cS member owns badge 01?

Badge #1 was worn by Launch Operations Manager Paul Donnelly. He had that number for all of the manned Apollo launches as far as I can tell.

Badge no. 1 appears to have been sold at the May 2013 Regency Superior space auction, lot 185. As noted above, the badge originated from the office of Kurt Debus and was in the possession of his secretary Shirley Ferguson.

The auction catalogue can be found here.
