I'm trying to get access to some exterior panels from a Mercury capsule, to take accurate measurements for a model.Does anyone know how I might be able to get access to such a thing? All of the historic capsules are behind plexiglass, but there must be other hardware - non-flown, engineering equipment or some such, which is to the same specifications which I might be able to get at. Can anyone help make any suggestions. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. Ross. |

John Fongheiser (Historic Space Systems) may already have those measurements available - he lurks on these boards and may respond directly or he can be reached via his site www.space1.com ------------------ Scott Schneeweis URL http://www.SPACEAHOLIC.com/ |

As some already know, I tend to guard most spacecraft data that I have as if it were a military secret. But these illustrations may help. ------------------ John Fongheiser President Historic Space Systems, http://www.space1.com |

John, thank you for that. There are a lot of interesting drawings in there, but the sort of information I'm actually after is the exact dimensions of the "slats" in the exterior skin of the spacecraft or precise info about the screws and washers used to secure them in place.Would you happen to have anything like that in your collection? Ross. |

John, what scale are those drawings of the instrument panels, when I convert from pixels to inches they are only about 11 inches tall and I still am having trouble finding what dimensions the real ones were. |

You can buy 1/12 scale plans drawn by David Weeks. His work if very accurate. |

Kraisee, that kind of data is the kind I restrict for use in my work.Mercury7, the panel scans are not done at any particular scale. But you might be interested in a near-full scale plot of the panel scan. ------------------ John Fongheiser President Historic Space Systems, http://www.space1.com |

Actually, it isn't the control panels on the interior which I am after. It's the black painted panels on the outside of the capsule which I'm after. The distinctive slatted appearance is very interesting, yet I have no specifications for them. I'm looking to produce some 1:1 scale replicas of the exterior of a Mercury capsule and want to the the exterior appearance perfect. Ross. |

Hi, I have access to a full scale mock-up. The capsule was made in the 60s. Origin? I took one of the panels off and compared it to a real spacecraft (Wally Schirra, Sigma 7). It fit perfectly. You could use it as a guide. -Lou |
