From Bigelow Aerospace: Once the domain of only the privileged, Bigelow Aerospace is now offering to the public an exciting new opportunity. For the first time, you can actually send an item of your own into space. Your personal selection will be floating inside a spacecraft hundreds of miles above the Earth. If all systems function properly, your personal treasure (be it a photo, ring, bottle-cap or toy) will be floating in space for years.And here is the best part: You might even be able to see it. That's right! The Bigelow Aerospace spacecraft known as Genesis II will be carrying multiple cameras. Some of these cameras will be viewing areas inside the spacecraft where your prized possession is floating. Everyday, Bigelow Aerospace will be downloading images and video from these cameras to its Website. If you log onto the Bigelow Aerospace Web portal, you will have a chance to actually see your item floating by! And who knows? If the Genesis II spacecraft stays in orbit for several years as we expect, you may see your face (or item) many times over! Please note that when you get to the page that they tell you that you will not get your item back but that it will burn up in the atmosphere upon re-entry.Still wanna go? |

Yeah, but then think of what you can send up. A lot of possibilities.How about a battery-powered digital readout of some kind to monitor temperature, radiation, etc. |

Can anyone please tell me why a person would put their "prized possession" into space only to have it burn up on reentry? The only thing I could think of would be to send someone's ashes. |

To see and know it is flying in space. Without the continuous streaming video, I wouldn't see the appeal in their offer but as anyone who has had an item of theirs fly in space can tell you, it's often the photograph taken of it while it was there that has more meaning than the item itself. So much so, that the video of it flying by a window (assuming there is one) with the Earth below and space above might be worth the loss of the physical property. |
