Does anyone have advice on researching nasa apollo hardware from the 1960's?

I am interested in finding out the following information:

- Manufacturer
- When the hardware was used by nasa
- Where it was used (Missions)
- Which astronauts may have handled the items

Is their a way to trace an item using its part and serial number. I asked a nasa contractor to look up some serial numbers, but he was unable to find anything using a current electronic catalogue.

Any advice welcome. I think my next move would be to write to nasa and maybe try and arange to visit the Johnson Space Center in Houston to ask for help.
