I have this small coin (about 4 grams or 0.15oz, 1 inch diameter). It reads on one side: Taken on board space flight mission STS-48 Shuttle orbiter "Discovery" 12. September 1991 Also "Selangor Pewter" and the names of the five astronauts.Has anyone ever seen that coin? Was it indeed flown on STS-48?

The STS-48 Official Flight Kit manifest lists a "Museum Pewter Medallion (3" dia)" being flown for the "Space and Technology Museum, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia."The implication is that only one medallion was flown. So are the eBay lot and the Space-Coins example the same piece changing hands? |

Interesting item. I wonder about its authenticity. The museum it says it was flown for was opened in 1996, construction was started in 1994, but the medal was flown in 1991. I would say that perhaps there was another museum prior, but the coin shows the one that opened in 1996. Perhaps they designed and flew the coin based on something that was going to happen. |

Robert, assuming the OFK is correct, these cannot be the coin listed as flown because the two coins described in this thread are around 1” in diameter, versus the 3” coin described in your OFK quote. Perhaps these were replicas made after to commemorate the flown medallion? |

Or maybe they melted down the flown medallion and minted some number of the smaller pieces. |

Found this on the Royal Selangor Facebook page from Sept. 11, 2021: 30 years ago today, the STS-48 space shuttle Discovery launched from Kennedy Space Centre, Florida. Onboard, astronaut James Buchli had with him the Selangor Pewter Space Medallion while he and his crew were in orbit. This space medallion is the first Malaysian-made and pewter object to be launched into space and was to commemorate the launch of the National Science Centre project.

Clearly different. Any ideas why? |

If not counterfeits, I think what was suggested earlier is the most likely situation: smaller replicas were reproduced to commemorate the larger flown medallion. I have emailed Royal Selangor to inquire if that is the case. |
