Hubble Space Telescope may come into focus on 2020 American Innovation coin

The United States Mint may issue a 2020 coin that highlights the vision that has gone into operating the Hubble Space Telescope for 30 years.

The golden dollar, if approved, will be part of the U.S. Mint's American Innovation $1 Coin Program. Introduced in 2018, the multi-year series honors innovation and innovators by issuing one dollar coins representing each of the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories.

The Hubble Space Telescope would represent the state of Maryland.

This would be terrific, and I hope it comes to fruition. Alas I can't help but think there is a (frustrating) "joke" to be made here regarding the JWST, specifically whether it will ever "come into focus" let alone be honored on a coin. Personally, I believe that it will, and I look forward to the day it, too, is available for purchase (and that I am alive when it happens).

Hubble Space Telescope to feature on American Innovation $1 coin

The Hubble Space Telescope will be honored on a new golden dollar coin reflecting the innovation embodied by the orbiting observatory and the U.S. state from where it is managed on the ground.

The United States Mint on Tuesday (June 30) revealed the official design for Maryland's entry in the American Innovation $1 coin program, highlighting the Hubble Space Telescope. The coin will be one of four golden dollars issued this year as part of an ongoing series to "pay homage to America's ingenuity and celebrate the pioneering efforts of individuals or groups from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories."

Awesome! A huge fan of the Hubble program and nice design for the coin. Will be on the lookout for a nice DCAM70 to add to my collection.

The U.S. Mint has updated its schedule to now have the rolls and bags (and official release date) listed only as "Winter 2020."

US Mint launches sale of new Hubble Space Telescope dollar coin

The Hubble Space Telescope stars on a new U.S. coin in celebration of the observatory's 30 years as a symbol of invention and ingenuity.

The United States Mint is starting sales of the Maryland American Innovation $1 Coin on Monday (Dec. 14) with rolls and bags of the new golden dollar. The multi-year American Innovation series commemorates the pioneering efforts of individuals or groups from all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories. The Hubble Space Telescope is managed from sites in Maryland, including NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt and Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.

"We are proud to share this new $1 coin with our fellow Marylanders and the nation, highlighting our state's contributions to expanding our knowledge of the universe," Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said in a statement.

Last astronauts to visit Hubble Space Telescope sign coins for AMF fundraiser

As the world's eyes turn to the deployment of a new space telescope, the Astronauts Memorial Foundation (AMF) is shining light on the last astronauts' to visit one.

The foundation, which maintains the Space Mirror Memorial and operates the Center for Space Education, both at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida, has revealed its latest fundraising effort, which combines history-making astronauts with U.S Mint commemoratives.

While not as cool as having an astronaut-signed slabbed coin, a group of students that has a store linked through spaceweather.com is selling single coins from this issue.

Rolls of these coins were flown to an altitude of almost 116,000 feet on a research balloon, and retrieved after the balloon burst and the payload parachuted back to the ground.

They can be bought here.

All times are CT (US)
