I found this medal in a box of items that came from Deke Slayton's estate. I have not been able to find any information on this specific medallion. All I know is the Bumper 8 rocket was the first Cape Canaveral launch. Can anybody please provide me with additional information of this medal, such as its history, significance, rarity, and desirability in the space memorabilia area?

I can assume this is the same coin that has been on sale on eBay recently. How did you determine it came out in 1976?Also what makes you think it contains 'Bumper 8' material? I have not been able to find any info on this. |

Out on the eBay auction (111583190206). You are bidding on a vintage NASA medallion with material from the Bumper 8 rocket launch, which was the first Cape Canaveral launch on July 14, 1950....this is a 1976 medallion. |

I would be suspect, unless there is an attached COA, of any coin/medallion advertised as having 'flown' metal if that fact is not printed/engraved on the medallion itself, as in the NASA Manned Flight Awareness issues. One thing is for this Bumper rocket coin to be of limited release (say to veterans of the V-2 launches), and another to see wider release to the public as in Winco sales of commemorative medallions. Worth looking into, but it is a nice-looking artifact. |

It's interesting that there's a Bumper 8 medallion especially when there's Bumper 1-8 that occurred. I'm curious as to why there would be only a Bumper 8 medallion, granted this is the only one I've ever seen. The other possibility is that the medallion incorporated metal from LC-3, much like LC-14/Launch Pad 14 and other similar medallions. Although, it appears that this is the first launch from Cape Canaveral of the Bumper Program. |

Unless, as stated, there is additional provenance, there is no reason to believe this medal contains any historic metal. As for why Bumper 8 would be singled out, I think the medallion itself identifies why it exists: to commemorate the first launch from Cape Canaveral. |

I am sorry to be late in responding. I removed this from eBay last week because I erroneously listed it as having metal flown. As soon as I found my error I had it taken down. I have found no information on this, and the coin does not say it was flown or contain any metal that was flown. I am sorry if I made this confusing by my initial eBay posting. I am obviously not as knowledgeable as most on this site but when I make mistakes or have questions I do look to learn and correct my errors when I make them. Thanks for the input and any help you can offer. |
