collectSPACE NASA medallion commemorates Curiosity rover's first year on MarsNASA is marking the Curiosity rover's first year on Mars with a commemorative medallion minted from metal used in the engineering of the robotic explorer. ...inscribed along an inner border are "Mars Exploration" and "NASA Official Commemorative." An inscription along the outer border reads: "This Medallion Was Minted With Test Metal Used During The Engineering Of Curiosity." Added to the antique copper used to mint the thousands of medallions was the metal from an engineering test unit for Curiosity's lower environmental control system (LECS) tee-duct. The LECS was designed for the MSL to cool the Multi-Mission Radio-Thermal Generator (MMRTG), which serves as Curiosity's nuclear power source. |

Individual medallions are not available directly from Winco. The Space Store is taking orders for the medal. |

No framed "Celebrate Mars Exploration" set from Winco, with Viking, Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity, Phoenix and Curiosity patches, pins and medallions? No? |

The Space Store has changed its shipping policy ($9 instead of $25 for the medallion). Now it's more in tune with what other vendors offer. On a sidenote, does The Space Store have an exclusive deal with Winco? |

No, The Space Store does not have an exclusive with Winco , though it is the only retailer (at the moment) listing the medal for sale. |

The Space Store currently shows these out of stock and they're taking email addresses for notification of when they have more.Interesting that we actually saw a photo released of the part that incorporated into the medal. I believe that's a first. |

Kennedy Space Center also has them and has already put a few in the mail to me. Winco told me that they sold out so they were going to do a second minting. I asked about the metal and the response was: The same Curiosity metal will be used. The new production run will improve on the dimensional work (may or may not be noticeable). Although the detail and dimension is exceptional on the first run (per EVERYONE who has seen it), the second run should be an improvement and then any future runs (until the Curiosity metal is gone) will be the same as the second run. Also, the plating from each production run typically varies a bit. Our goal will be to match, but this most likely wont happen perfectly. So more stock will be out in a few months. I asked, but didn't get an answer yet, regarding what the total mintage might be. |
