Does anyone have any idea what this coin, is a more or less ballpark value and any other info you can share? Thanks. It's 2" in diameter, brass or gold colored, and quite heavy. I appreciate your help.

Al, the words along the border on the reverse (second image) are: Podlipki * Kaliningrad, * Korolev * 1938-2003. From Wikipedia: The town of Kaliningrad (formerly Podlipki, Moscow region) is the home of RSC Energia, the largest space company in Russia. In 1996, Boris Yeltsin renamed the town to Korolyov. There is now an oversized statue of S.P. Korolev located in the town square. RSC Energia was also renamed to S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia. It appears the reverse depicts the entrance to Korolev City. The front of the medal reads Naukograd Russia. Again from Wikipedia: Naukograd, meaning "science city", is a formal term for towns with high concentration of research and development facilities in Russia and the Soviet Union, some specifically built by the Soviet Union for these purposes. (I amended your subject line accordingly.) |

Interesting to note the 1938 year engraved on the Russian medallion. It has to be a 65-year anniversary of an early Russian rocket or related historical event, or "something" rocket-space related! It was five years earlier (1933) that the Soviets had their first launch of a liquid fueled rocket, GIRD-9. But wasn't their key rocket developer, Sergei Korolev, arrested in 1938 and imprison for a few years, therefore, why celebrate or commemorative the 1938 year? As Robert pointed out, the medallion does relate to Korolev and perhaps to his hometown. When time permits, let me show the medallion picture to a Russian friend that perhaps can help translate the engravings for us,or, there must be a few English-speaking Russian cS-viewers out there that can perhaps help us. |

Thanks Rob.Sure Ken, I'd appreciate it. I'm stumped as to how I even got it, Yury Usachev may have given it to me or someone else. I found it cleaning my office. |

Well, Rob's translation was spot on according to my Russian friends. Now the questions that remain: Possible value of this coin? What's it minted for? Thanks! |

It would seem the medallion marks the 65th anniversary of the founding of Kaliningrad, the "cradle of Soviet and Russian space exploration," which was later renamed Korolev (or Korolyov) in 1996. |
