I recently found a very nice "Commemorative Medallion" set from 1969 stashed in the corner of a show case in a weapons museum in Florida. Search as I might, I can't find any information out about them.

They are titled "Man In Space" "Commemorating US Manned Space Missions". There is also a small booklet with them "History of Major US Space Flights". Both items dated 1969.

There are 22 "gold" coins double side. On the front is the mission number, crew names and picture, on the back is paragraph detail.

Any help would be appreciated. The set was unopened when I found it.

Is this the set you own?

If so, than it was issued as you say in 1969 by the Glendinning Companies, Inc. Though I don't have many specific details, I believe this set was a commercial release sold as public souvenir of the moon landing. The set can be found periodically on eBay, selling for $10 to $25.

Yes, thank you. That's the set. Although the "booklet" is somewhat different. What is the coin material? I'm assuming then that the "set" is not very rare, just difficult to find information on? I appreciate your response. Back to collecting and digging in old stores!

Just a thought - I have a few of these sets and even have one of the coins in a cheaper silver metal. When I was a kid in the 70's, we could collect presidential coins of the lightweight aluminum (from Shell stations). Once you collected the whole set, you sent the coins off and got a bronze set with mounting card in return.

I would have originally assumed you could just send off for the Man In Space set since there are few of the aluminum coins around. But since I have a few... my guess is everyone cared more to send of the space ones and therefore, the silver aluminum ones were all sent back.

Susan, my recollection was that you got the aluminum ones when buying gas or just stopping by a Shell station and asking for one and they had a cardboard sheet with half-circles "punched" in them to mount the aluminum.

Once in a while you got a "Winner" coin to send in for your set of the brass ones but then again, maybe it was a collect them/trade them. Anybody have specific memories of how this worked? Maybe Susan is right...

I do know that I got one of the bronze sets, probably by writing one of my famous "nice letters" asking for one that I was so good at writing when I was a kid because I know for sure that there are one or two partial aluminum sets floating around in their mounting pages.

I recently bought a box full of the 1969 Man in Space coins. I didn't know much about them when I bought them but it seems these were from a game that the Shell gasoline station ran in 1969.

I have about 200 loose coins and perhaps 100 still in the "shell" packages unopened. Apparently these came with a collector card holder to keep them in but I don't have any of those.

I'm not sure if these have any value or if they are collectible. I seem to have Freedom 7, Friendship 7, Faith 7, all Gemini flights except Gemini 7 and Apollo 7 – 11. The missing coins maybe in the unopened packs. Any advice would be appreciated.

I would open the packs to see what is 'missing'. Maybe you could complete the set?

In Europe, there were also Man in Space Shell medallion sets. I have them from the following countries, Netherlands, England, Denmark, France, Germany (two different) Belgium and Italy.

The medallions in Europe are different from the USA ones. In the card are 20 different bronze medals and in the set from England 16 aluminium medals. The pictures on the medal are the same in all European countries.

All times are CT (US)
