I have seen a Mercury Redstone 4 25th anniversary cover with a medallion affixed to it. On the backside of the limited edition cover is a seal that states: "This medallion includes metal that was flown in spacecraft". My question is: how could that be when Liberty Bell 7 was not recovered for years later? Was it some sort of item that Gus carried with him and melted down such as one of the dimes? Does anyone know the answer? Does anyone know who created the covers and medallion? Please advise. Thanks! Rick   |

The simple answer Rick, is that the medallion probably does not contain metal flown on Liberty Bell 7. As was raised by an earlier thread, this cover and medal is part of a series of similar combos for a wide variety of missions. According to Florian Noller, they were made by German stamp and coin dealer Goede. The wording, "This medallion includes metal that was flown in spacecraft," appears on all of the covers. As such, it leaves open for the very real possibility that the flown metal came from a single spacecraft and not necessarily (or likely) from the one for which the covers commemorate. |

Didn't see this earlier post before in July, but as Florian noted, German stamp dealer Michael Gode did produce a series of space medallion covers like this that commemorated highlight anniversaries. Many, if not all, of his covers for the Cape area were probably serviced-postmarked by my company, mostly throughout the 1980s. This particular issue for MR-4, with a medallion that contains spacecraft flown metal, was certainly not from LB-7 nor any other Mercury or Gemini spacecraft.
I can't be sure, after so many years, but I am thinking that he incorporated flown metal of the MSA-issued medallions that came from the Apollo/Skylab/Shuttle eras.

I'm not a cover collector, but I am a Mercury buff. As Ken & Robert said no way was this flown on MR-4. The art work is nice but don't pay big bucks for it.
