Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex announcement
Kennedy Space Center 50th anniversary medal

For 50 years, John F. Kennedy Space Center has been the United States' gateway to space. From carrying astronauts into orbit aboard rockets and space shuttles, launching space exploration probes and constructing the International Space Station, to building the vision and the future, the journey to space begins and ends at Kennedy Space Center.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is offering guests special admission packages that include a special commemorative medal.

Each medal features NASA's official Kennedy Space Center 50th anniversary logo on their obverse and on the reverse, a four-panel, full color scene depicting the past half-century of U.S. human space exploration — which all began from the Florida spaceport.

Each is inscribed: This Medallion Was Minted With Medal Flown On Apollo And Space Shuttle Missions.

The medal is included with either a single day admission or annual pass, each at up to a 30% discount off normal ticket prices.

Sorry not to see Skylab depicted in there along with every other flown craft.

I just saw this on eBay. Is this the official coin? If so, it does have Skylab. I was expecting one with colors, and the back that is shown above.

This is not the medal being distributed through the Visitor Complex promotion, but rather one produced by Galaxy Medals.

Okay thanks. I was also confused since it didn't mention having the flown metal.

I see these are starting to pop up on eBay at pricing ranging from $40-90, and not colorized on both sides. Anyone see them for retail some place more reasonable?

I found these available at the NASA Exchange at Kennedy Space Center for $10.95 each plus shipping.

Nicole Benzenhafer, the kind woman processing my order, said she'd take orders from others if folks are interested. I asked her before sharing that info and she said just email her.

I received my coin in the mail yesterday (I ordered it on June 11th when space-E posted the post above). The coin is beautiful... even my wife liked this one.

I also received my coin in the mail yesterday. It is a very nice addition to my collection of coins with "Flown" metal in them!

They were not available when I was at KSC in April, but the three month wait was worth it. Nicole was a big help and kept me posted on the progress of ordering and shipping.

In case anyone was interested, this medal is currently 25% off. Just happened to call to get one, and that's the discount Nicole offered. Don't know how long it'll last, however.

Just fyi.

Were you able to get the medallion that is colored on one side or both sides?

The medal was similar to the representation shown in the original post. However, the reverse was not colored, although the embossed design (on the metal) was similar to the colored Winco illustration, like what you see here from that page. Are there versions of the medal with both sides colored?

There is ones with both sides colored? I have not seen one other in the original post. All I have seen are colored on the obverse and not on the reverse.

I think that was the idea but it never came to pass. Mine is only colored on one side as well, as is all the ones I've ever seen online.

Just received mine in the post. I ordered on 18th Dec and reveived it on 31st. Nicole was a charming and very helpful lady to deal with, and discounts were still being applied. The medallion is, as most other posts have indicated, only colored on the obverse side, but a superb memento all the same.

I just spoke to Nicole about these and she says they are closing out their inventory of this coin — at a 35% discount so that's just over 7 dollars each plus shipping. They plan to cease sales shortly, so reach out if you want yours!

I also asked about a double sided color one and she said she never saw one. She said that she thought they discussed it early on, but decided for costs reasons that coloring only one side made sense.

Nicole will take orders Tuesday and Thursday by phone at 321-867-1344. She can also add in any of the general Winco ones or other non-flown coins that they have in stock.

All times are CT (US)
