KSCartist | Looking over one of my scrapbooks, I was wondering about the creativity of different space shuttle crew photos. My favorite is STS-39 with the guys standing in the cloud of dry ice with the horizon behind them. My second favorite is the STS-112 with the crew standing on their emblem. Both of those stand apart from the typical studio type pose. What do the rest of you think? Which is your favorite and why? |
Tom | I always thought the STS-51I (20th mission) crew photo was pretty unique. |
Mike Dixon | My vote... I'd have to split it between STS-36, STS-42 and STS-49. All external to the traditional studio shots... my favourite would probably be STS-36. |
pokey | STS-39 is definitely a great crew photo. Attended a talk Guy Bluford gave a few years ago at University of Houston-Clear Lake where he explained that at the time of the portrait, he was getting ready to have back surgery in time to make the flight. He was sitting off to the side in a chair while the crew photo logistics was being worked out. When the signal was given that everyone was posed and they were ready for him he managed to stand up long enough to get that shot. |
OV-105 | Out of the regular studios, 41-D or 51-A. I liked the model of the ship Discovery and how they had the solar wing on the shuttle. You got to love the eagle on 51-A. STS-50 the only real crew photo with their ship. |
icarkie | STS-39 is a cool photo with the dry ice (no pun intended). STS-110 and 111 are good with ISS and Earth in the background, But my favourite is the alternative crew photo of STS-95 with John Glenn and the crew posing like the Mercury 7 astronauts. The original pose of the Mercury 7 astronauts in there silver spacesuit in my opinion is a classic photo. |
Moltke | STS-6 'F Troop' alternative is neat, with the astronauts dressed in cavalry uniform. Sometimes you see a signed copy with Story getting into the mood by signing as Sgt Story Musgrave! |
OV-105 | Funny thing about the STS-49 crew pic is that is a pic of Endeavour on the day she was rolled out. Rick Hieb was in orbit on the STS-39 flight on the day of the roll out. |
Jacques van Oene | The best photo I think is STS-41 with the T-38. The STS-92 funny photo (crew with Austin Powers) is also a great photo... |

The crew was photoshopped into the photo of Endeavour. And a detail about the STS-36 crew photo: that is actually Discovery on the launch pad, photographed one day prior to the STS-33 launch. Much like the Apollo 9 crew photo, which has Apollo 8 in the background on the pad. My favorite crew photo is the STS-61C crew with the closed helmet visors! |
OV-105 | That is the nice thing about the STS-49 crew photo it is hard to tell it is photoshopped. When I got to meet Pierre Thuot he asked me what was wrong with the photo? I told him it was taken at the roll out and that Rick Hieb wasn't there. We had a good laugh. STS-42 is another good photoshop. |
Mike Dixon | Thanks for your comments Ed regarding STS-49. Wouldn't have known that... |
LM-12 | This STS-77 crew photo with Endeavour is impressive. The STS-110 astronauts stood near the external tank for this crew photo. |
Robert Pearlman | For a similar discussion, see this archived 2011 topic. |
LM-12 | John Young poses with the STS-114 crewmembers under Discovery in 2004. |
onesmallstep | For 'unofficial,' nothing beats the gag photo for the 61C crew. They look like an Indy car pit crew. Also any of the photos taken of Young and Crippen with the STS-135 crew. |
