Robert Pearlman | NASA will have several opportunities to land the Space Shuttle Discovery Tuesday, both at the Kennedy Space Center and two backup sites. Times are approximate and subject to change. All times CDT: Primary landing site: Kennedy Space Center 4:07 a.m. landing (de-orbit burn at 3:01 a.m.) 5:43 a.m. landing (de-orbit burn at 4:37 a.m.) First backup site: Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. 7:12 a.m. landing (de-orbit burn at 6:06 a.m.) 8:47 a.m. landing (de-orbit burn at 7:44 a.m.) Second backup site: White Sands Test Facility, N.M. 5:39 a.m. landing (de-orbit burn at 4:33 a.m.) 7:13 a.m. landing (de-orbit burn at 6:09 a.m.) There are landing opportunities Wednesday at all three sites, if needed. Tom | Thanks for posting, Robert. And for those of us in the New York area, Discovery and ISS will be visible in the pre-dawn sky on orbit 218...only if it misses it's first landing opportunity at KSC. The shuttle will be trailing ISS by about 5 minutes. ISS will become visible in the SSW about 5:04 a.m. heading in a NE direction. |
Rodina | How many flights have landed at White Sands at this point? 2? |
Tom | Just one...STS-3 |
OV-105 | Ok lets start the bets, Where is Discovery going to land. My money is on Edwards. The mornings have been real nice out here with thunderstorms in the afternoon. |
mensax | So... what do the astronauts do with an extra day in space... do they get to relax and look out the window? Noah |
Spacepsycho | My bet is KSC on their 2nd orbit opportunity. It seems that NASA is bent on avoiding flying Discovery across the USA if at all possible. Noah, I was watching NASA TV this morning and the announcer said that the crew is having a free day off enjoying looking out the window and finishing some clean up chores. I hope they brought a camera |
OV-105 | I think it was STS 61-C back in 1986 shot every roll of film they had on the flight with all of their waveoffs. The STS-114 crew has done a great job they earned a day at the windows in my book. |
Robert Pearlman | Mission Control Houston called the crew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery to wave off the first landing opportunity at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida Tuesday. Weather conditions at the landing site are not acceptable for that opportunity. The second Florida opportunity is one orbit later. It would require a three-minute deorbit burn at 4:37 a.m. CDT, with touchdown occurring at 5:43. |
HouseDadX4 | Looks like Edwards AFB is the call due to weather in Florida.. |
Robert Pearlman | Continued instability at Kennedy Space Center has led Mission Control to wave off on the second landing opportunity at Kennedy Space Center. Discovery's preparing for a landing at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. today. |
1202 Alarm | Goodbye KSC, now it's Edwards. deorbit 6.06am touchdown 7.12am Central Time on runway 22. (from me in front of Live Nasa TV at 5am11 EST) |
thump | They're Home! Way to Go Discovery!!!! |
HouseDadX4 | Congratulations to the STS 114 crew and mission control on a fantastic landing..great start to the morning!!! |
Henry_Heatherbank | And a great end to the day in Adelaide, South Australia (landing time 9:40pm), Andy Thomas's home town. |
OV-105 | It is great to have Discovery back home in the AV at Edwards, sorry KSC. For me the AV will always be the home of the Shuttle. Now off to Domingo's! |
ejectr | My son, newly stationed at Edwards AFB in flight test, witnessed the shuttle landing this AM. He said it was rather hard to see in the dark, but no mistaking its arrival with the sonic booms and approach of 300 knots with the sound of the air flowing over the spacecraft. Lucky dog..... |
