T O P I C R E V I E W4allmankindDo the incoming members of the Astronaut Hall of Fame receive any type of plaque or other keepsake of their induction? The Baseball Hall of Fame gives each incoming member a version of their bronze plaque but is there any such thing for the Astronaut Hall of Fame members?Robert PearlmanAs pictured here, each inductee is presented with a medal engraved with their name.Mike_The_FirstI was wondering — what goes into selecting inductees for the Astronaut Hall of Fame?In sports and music, there are stats and numbers that dictate such inductions, but aside from number of missions or amount of time in space, there really aren't stats like that for astronauts, are there?Robert PearlmanInitially, the Astronaut Hall of Fame inducted astronauts according to the programs in which they flew. The Mercury 7 were inducted as a class when the Hall opened in 1990. The Gemini astronauts were added in 1993 and in 1997, 24 Apollo astronauts were enshrined (the Apollo inductees included all those who flew in Apollo spacecraft, including on Skylab and Apollo-Soyuz missions). In 2001, space shuttle astronauts began being inducted based on merit. To be eligible, the astronauts must have made their first flight at least 17 years before the nomination year; be a U.S. citizen; a NASA-trained commander, pilot or mission specialist; and must have orbited the Earth at least once. The nomination committee appointed by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation evaluates the nominees not only on their space experiences and accomplishments, but also how s/he contributed to the success and future of the space program in other activities.sev8nWhat is the significance of the 17 year wait? I would expect a 5 or 10 or 20 year wait, but 17 seems rather arbitrary.Robert PearlmanIt was driven by the first class of shuttle astronauts. In 2001, the eligible nominees had to have made a first flight between the start of the program (in 1981) and 1984. Each year since then, it has advanced a year.
