He was 81.Zaikin was selected as a cosmonaut in the same group as Yuri Gagarin in 1960 and was the backup commander for Voskhod 2 in 1965. He was medically disqualified in 1969 and never flew in space. He was a modest, almost shy man, who was surprised that foreign visitors were interested in him, since he had never flown. Pyotr Kolodin was kind enough to arrange a meeting with him and of course we had a brandy toast with them. We had thought he might outlive all the flown guys. Another unsung cosmonaut hero.
