Bram | Are there any pictures available from John Young in his office as a chief astronaut?
|
brianjbradley | In terms of his office specifically, not sure. To see him in action, I'd check the crew walk out photos for STS-2 through STS-7. As Office Chief, he escorted the crew and can be seen. |
Lunar_module_5 | The BBC documentary "John Young - The Ultimate Explorer" from 1982 shows John in an office (I don't know if this was his office but I am guessing it was) being interviewed for the programme. A video still from that programme could help you? |
mjanovec | Young is also visible in the role of chief astronaut during the sad ceremony where the remains of the Challenger astronauts are being transferred. That had to be one of the most difficult duties a chief astronaut has ever had to perform. As for a photo of his office, I've seen very few photos of ANY astronaut's office. Either the offices are not of interest to the official photographers...or they may be mostly considered private. |
Robert Pearlman | Stéphane Sebile e-mailed with the following: I have found this picture (believe 1980) with John Young in his office in Houston |
Bram | Thanks for this pic! Indeed, photos of astronauts in their offices are hard to find. I would like to see more pics of them behind their desks. |

carmelo | I have found this picture (believe 1980) with John Young in his office in Houston Was the same office of Deke Slayton? |
golddog | Does anyone know what the name is on Young's spacesuit in that picture? It appears to be a Gemini style, in close up the name is not Young's. |
Besixdouze | Looks to me like that well known astronaut 'Medium Regular' |
APG85 | I heard "Medium Regular" doesn't like to sign autographs so don't ask... |
golddog | That's as good a guess as any. |

It is Medium Regular. Because Small Medium mysteriously disappeared after a meeting with George Abbey and was never seen again. JSC Roundup's article on the matter had the headline "Small Medium At Large."(And I heard Young changed from Medium Regular to Quite Regular after drinking orange juice while on the Moon....) |

Here's Jon McBride behind his desk. Author and friend Rick Houston is in the foreground. And here's the view Jon has looking forward from his desk: |
Michael Cassutt | quote: Originally posted by carmelo: Was the same office of Deke Slayton?
No. Slayton's office, as director of flight crew operations, was in a different building — #9, I believe, JSC HQ. The astronaut office was Building #4. |
Hart Sastrowardoyo | Not mine, but here's Steve Hawley at his office, circa 1995. |

Is an Apollo-1 type suit. |
tetrox | With fear of being the laughing stock it looks to me like the name says "MEDIUM REGULAR." Maybe it is just a general or surplus suit used for testing and spacecraft evaluation purposes by engineers etc. On edit: Sorry, I hadn't realised the question had already been answered. I only read the last post. |
