| jiffyq58 | I am thinking of trying to acquire a signed copy of one of Jim Irwin's books. I am wondering what some of you think is the best of his books. He has several out there, and I don't have a good idea about that. I guess if I'm going to get just one, I would like it to be the one that has the most about his astronaut career and Apollo 15, and the least religiously oriented material. Can I get some opinions? Thanks! |
| randy | My suggestion would be "To Rule the Night". |
| DChudwin | I agree with "To Rule the Night." While it discusses his religious beliefs, most of it is about his life experiences including Apollo 15 and his walk on the Moon. When I met Jim in 1986 he inscribed a copy to me, which is a prized possession. |
| jiffyq58 | Thanks, Randy and David. Any other opinions? |
| spaced out | I can only agree with the above. "To Rule the Night" is the main book about his NASA career. Unless you're particularly interested in his religious views this is the book to get. |
| fredtrav | Definitely "To Rule The Night." "More than Earthlings" and "More Than an Ark on Ararat" are more about religion and "Destination Moon" is for younger people. |
| jimsz | I may have an extra autographed copy of To Rule the Night at home somewhere. I can look if you are interested. |
| jiffyq58 | Thanks for that offer, but I believe I have a source for To Rule the Night. And thanks for all of your comments. Looks like it's unanimous. |
| OLDIE | You may or may not be aware that there are two versions of this book. The first was published by A.J.Holman Company ISBN-0-87981-024-6. The second by Broadman Press ISBN-0-87981-629-5. The second book has had one of the original photographs removed and replaced by three new ones. Additionally, a new chapter, entitled "Heart Attack" has been added, together with a different Epilogue. The second book has a copyright date 1982. |
| fredtrav | Holman also published a softcover copy of To Rule the Night in 1982(also published one in 1975 with a different cover). Do not have a copy of it so I do not kn ow if it is revised as well. It seems to have the same ISBN number. |
| astro-nut | I have all of Jim Irwin's book that he wrote and co-wrote. All book were great to read. Colonel Irwin sent all his books to me while I was in the military. I enjoyed them all! |
